Jeremy Schleicher

Jeremy Schleicher, Lead Database Administrator at FSU Information Technology Services (ITS), will share advice with students about how to land a job in an IT market.  His presentation will take place on Thursday, May 23, from 2-3 p.m. in the William Johnston Building (WJB), Room 2004.

Schleicher has worked in his current role at ITS for over eight years since 2005.  He manages a staff of three Database Administrators who are responsible for operation of FSU’s databases.  They handle all tasks, assignments, development of project plans, as well as operating software and database patching outages.

Schleicher regularly works with vendors on proof of concept projects, including evaluation of Oracle and other software database programs.  Prior to working at FSU, he was the Senior Database Administrator at May Department Stores for almost six years.

The School of Communication’s documentary production class held a film production premiere for their final projects on Thursday, May 2.  The show featured a total of seven short pieces, each about 15-20 minutes, in FSU’s Student Life Cinema (SLC).

Throughout the spring semester, groups of media production student filmmakers worked on developing and producing documentaries.  They were not only responsible for creating a video of professional quality, but crafting all of the concepts, facts, and content.  The RTV4332 course is taught every spring semester by Dr. Andrew Opel, Communication Associate Professor and Media Production Program Director, who coordinated this screening event.

The cinema was filled with students, friends, and faculty as the lights dimmed and the night’s showing began.  Many aspects played an integral part in the success of each film.  The thorough amount of research and planning incorporated into the student’s original project concepts was evident.  The cinematography and graphics demonstrated their creative strengths.  A round of applause from the audience greeted the end of each documentary shown.

While the film topics were diverse, they all had one thing in common—high quality and attention to detail.  Dr. Stephen McDowell, School of Communication John H. Phipps Professor and Director, attended this event and said, “I was impressed by another year’s successful documentary screening coordinated by Opel and the work produced by our students.  The level of research, story, and presentation improves significantly each year.”

The pieces covered various themes such as: climate change, party buses, organic food, computer ennui, graffiti ghosts, mental health policy, and costume play.  They ranged from issues of local interest to global importance; showcasing journeys of struggle to stories focused on displaying culture and talent.  The seven videos showcased were titled: As We Grow, Baker-Acted, Chasing Ghosts, Dis|Connected, Finding Nero, Perfection Zero, and Shabooms Springs.

The second Steve Ellis Memorial 5K Scholarship Run/Walk will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 18.  The race will begin and end at the FSU Baseball Stadium.

Proceeds will be used towards the Steve Ellis Memorial Scholarship Fund that supports students in FSU’s School of Communication in memory of Ellis, longtime FSU sportswriter for the Tallahassee Democrat.  The scholarship “aims to help foster and assist future professionals in the field of broadcast and sports reporting.”  It is an appropriate way to honor Ellis, who had a passion for journalism and also a genuine desire to mentor younger people in the profession.

Registration costs $15 if you want a t-shirt and $12 without a shirt. Register online at ellis5k.com by the day of the race and on-site registration begins at 7 a.m.  There will be an “Overall and Age Group Awards.”

The 2013 FSU Supervisors’ Conference, sponsored by the School of Communication Science & Disorders, will be held on Wednesday, May 15, from 1-4:30 p.m.  This event will take place at the FSU Turnbull Conference Center located at 555 West Pensacola Street.  Free visitor parking is available in the attached parking garage on level 4.

The conference topic is ethics education for students and how to address ethical behavior with them in supervisory contexts, as well as ethics of supervision.  By attending this event, participants will learn how to:

1. List the characteristics that lead to the development of a self-monitoring profession
2. Identify professional vs. non-professional behavior
3. Describe the means by which a self-monitoring profession develops a Code of Ethics
4. Identify & teach ethical issues most germane for student learning
5. Determine a means for using ethical behavior to guide decisions affecting others

Guest Speaker, Sue T. Hale

Sue T. Hale will be the conference’s guest speaker discussing “Ethical Decision-Making: What Students and Professionals Need to Know.”  Hale serves as Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at Vanderbilt University.  She is the former President of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Hale has also contributed on many ASHA boards and committees.

This activity is offered to FSU employees for 0.3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) counting towards the Advanced level, Professional area.  Find out more about opportunities to earn CEUs at the Center for Academic and Professional Development’s website.

The College of Communication & Information hosted its first Speed Collaborating Luncheon on April 29.  The purpose of this event was for faculty to share current research, exchange perspectives, and identify ideas for future collaborations.   

FSU faculty who attended ranged from various disciplines, departments, schools and colleges.  Some of the main discussion topics centered on e-learning, social media, technology research, community engagement, health communication and information, literacy, language and communication.

The College considers this inaugural luncheon was successful and plans to schedule another similar event in the fall.   Faculty will receive an invitation to participate again for a future date.
