thumbnail_1500758_10201202648364044_624533174_oKathryn Lyons (B.A. ’11) has always had a genuine interest in understanding people and communicating their stories. Her knack for speaking to and in front of people was matched with a little bit of the jitters, but she enjoyed it enough to know that she wanted to work professionally in the realm of communication. Her degree in Mass Media Communication has taken her to great heights, allowing her to hold positions with shows like NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams and the TODAY Show.

She explains, “My degree at FSU has helped me get to this point in my career – not simply the piece of paper that made my graduation ‘official,’ but all that it represents: distinguished academics, emphasis on community and a focus on personal and intellectual development.”

Today, the alum is the Managing Editor of FamousDC, a website dedicated to telling the behind-the-scenes stories of Washington, D.C. She manages the day-to-day content published on the website by the team of brilliant and creative minds at FamousDC and helps the publication engage with an even larger presence in D.C.

She shares, “No day is the same and I love it. We’re a media company and, as you learn in any media class, it’s constantly changing and evolving – especially in the digital world. It’s exciting! There’s so much to keep up with and better yet, so much incentive to improve and stay ahead.”

Lyons’ favorite part of the digital world is the reach that it has and its constant growth and evolution.

She comments, “Just when you think you’ve reached as many people as you think you can, boom – someone retweets you and now there are a million other humans that you didn’t even know existed that you’re being introduced to.

In her spare time, Lyons enjoys eating candy (“Kidding, kind of,” she says), exploring the history of our country’s capital and running. She doesn’t know quite where she’ll be in five years, but she hopes that she’ll be making people laugh and inspiring them.
