FSU Alum Victoria Hollar: Volunteer, Choir Singer, and Speech-Language Pathologist

When Victoria Hollar (B.S. Communication Disorders, ’03 and M.S. Speech-Language Pathology, ’05) was considering career paths, she was drawn to a career as a speech-language pathologist because she wanted to use her strengths in communication and interpersonal relations. Today, those skills have brought her to Halcyon Rehabilitation as the National Director of Clinical Services.

As Director, Hollar is responsible for planning, developing, and coordinating clinical education to several factions of the clinical interdisciplinary team on a national level. She also develops and delivers clinical education via a variety of mediums, including in-person trainings, webinars, and written resources. This means that she always has to know the latest in dynamic national healthcare regulations.

She explains, “I have to stay up-to-date on the ever-changing healthcare regulations from a national perspective, and educate our clinicians accordingly. I enjoy ensuring that our clinicians are using best practices in their daily service delivery.”

Hollar values her experience from FSU and the education with which it provided her. She especially treasures the knowledge she acquired from her Neurological Bases of Communication class with Dr. Leonard “Chick” LaPointe, whose teaching style has served as a model for her own teaching style. As for her graduate school classes, the course that sticks out the most to Hollar is her Counseling in SLP class with Dr. Lisa Scott. Dr. Scott helped her understand the importance of looking at the patient as a whole person as opposed to only looking at the clinical aspect.

She says, “My time in my undergraduate and graduate work has proven invaluable to my professional success.”

When she isn’t busy working with clinicians, Regional Directors, and her Clinical Services team, Hollar enjoys serving with the Junior League of Tallahassee, a volunteer organization of women dedicated to improving the lives of children in our community. She is currently the chairperson for two committees that focus on partnerships with community non-profits, including the PACE Center for Girls. She additionally enjoys singing and participates in a choir. Hollar is also a huge sports fan; of course, the Noles are her favorite.
