Summer Harlow Talks Social Media Across the Globe

This summer, you can find School of Communication assistant professor Summer Harlow talking about online and social media at conferences in the United States, Puerto Rico and Argentina!

The International Communication Association (ICA) Annual Conference will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico from May 21-25. Harlow will be presenting two papers at the conference: “Regenerating Journalism: Exploring the “Alternativeness” and “Digital-ness” of Online-Native Media in Latin America” (Summer Harlow and Ramón Salaverria, University of Navarra) and “Social Media and Cuidadania: Analyzing the influence of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube on citizenship norms in Latin America” (Summer Harlow and Patrick Merle).

The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Annual Conference will also be held in Puerto Rico from May 27-30. At this conference, Harlow will be presenting her paper, “Facebook as Alternative Media? Toward an Understanding of How Activists in El Salvador Use Social Media for Social Change.” 

The World Association for Public Research (WAPOR) Annual Conference will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from June 16-19. Harlow will be presenting her paper, “Fear the Fan: How #Fangate talk on Twitter impacted Florida’s 2014 gubernatorial campaigns”. (Summer Harlow and Patrick Merle).

In August, Harlow will be honored at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Conference in San Francisco for her dissertation. She has been selected as this year’s AEJMC Nafziger-White-Salwen Dissertation Award, which provides recognition for the best Ph.D. dissertation in the field of mass communication research excellence.

Harlow will be presenting four papers at AEJMC, two of which have won awards. Her paper “Framing #Ferguson: A comparative analysis of media tweets in the U.S., U.K., Spain, and France,” was awarded 2nd place for Top Faculty Paper Award in the Minorities and Communication Division. Her paper “Liberation Technology? Understanding a Community Radio Station’s Social Media Use in El Salvador,” took 3rd place in the International Division as well.

“I am beyond thrilled,” she said. “I’m still in shock, and humbled and grateful to receive such recognition. What a way to celebrate the end of my first year as a professor!
