Internship opportunity at FSU Libraries: Library Publishing

 

The Library Publishing Intern focuses his/her efforts on advancing ongoing open access publishing initiatives and related faculty outreach at Florida State University (FSU) Libraries. Apart from providing technical support for existing publishing partners, the Library Publishing Intern will work on compiling a list of faculty editors from FSU’s Faculty Expertise and Advancement System (FEAS), contacting editors to promote the Libraries publishing services and solicit new partners, creating related outreach and training materials, and participating in ongoing planning for the expansion of Library Publishing services at FSU.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of how digital technology is changing the academic publishing environment, with a specific focus on the role of open-source publishing platforms in advancing the cause of Open Access.
  • Gain hands-on experience with online publishing platforms and digital asset management systems (specifically Open Journal Systems and Islandora Scholar).
  • Develop skills in building and managing relationships with publishing partners, including outreach and marketing, technical support, project management workflows and documentation, and rights management.

These learning objectives will be accomplished through regular readings in current literature on library publishing, integration into current ongoing projects and planning for future initiatives, and active engagement with research faculty and graduate students.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with Digital Humanities Librarian, Scholarly Communications Librarian, and Digital Scholarship Technologist on plans to expand the FSU Libraries’ publishing program
  • Assists in managing relationships with current publishing partners, including two active journals hosted on the Open Journal Systems platform
  • Gathers and compiles data on editorial appointments of FSU faculty from the Faculty Expertise and Advancement System (FEAS)
  • Creates documentation, outreach materials, and training materials for current and future publishing partners
  • Helps evaluate changing needs and possible service developments based both on recent literature and on interactions with faculty and graduate editors.
  • Assists with development of an assessment plan for library publishing, including key metrics and performance indicators
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

Required: Interest in academic librarianship, open access, copyright, digital repositories, altmetrics, library publishing and digital scholarship. If working as a remote intern, appropriate technology is required (personal computer, webcam and microphone, high-speed internet connection).

Recommended: Comfort and advanced competency with various information technologies including chat, Google docs, online research, database searching and basic metadata.

 

Hours

This is a part-time position with the expectation of 10-15 hours of work per week. Internships for academic credit will be unpaid.
