Internship — Civil Division’s FOIA, Records, and E-Discovery Office (Washington DC)

Department of Justice Records and Information Management Intern

The Civil Division’s FOIA, Records, and E-Discovery Office at the Department of Justice invites applications for an unpaid volunteer summer internship opportunity in records and information management in Washington, DC.

The Civil Division’s FOIA, Records, and E-Discovery Office is an innovative team charged with implementing legally and procedurally strategic approaches to FOIA, records, and e-discovery.  The FOIA, Records, and E-Discovery Office is part of the Office of the Assistant Attorney General, Civil Division of the Department of Justice.  Among its many responsibilities, the office is in charge of managing the Civil Division’s records in compliance with the Federal Records Act and developing innovative and efficient approaches to records and information management. The office is taking a proactive approach to achieve the goals outlined by President Obama in the Managing Government Records Directive for federal agencies to evaluate and modernize their records processes.

The Civil Division’s FOIA, Records, and E-Discovery Office would like to extend one unpaid, volunteer summer internship opportunity to a student interested in records and information management. The ideal candidate would be a graduate student in library and information science or information management who is interested in learning more about these exciting developments in the Civil Division’s records processes and across the federal government. Potential opportunities include research assignments and special projects as well as providing substantive and administrative support for initiatives related to managing both digital and physical assets. Projects may be tailored according to the interests and strengths of the intern, but possibilities include tasks related to a range of fields such as digital asset preservation and governance; preparing permanent records transfers to the National Archives and Records Administration; information architecture; records schedule evaluation and development; user experience (UX); project management; data management; and/or technical writing. Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint is desired but not required.

Our office may partner with your school if academic credit is available for volunteer internships. Some colleges and universities may offer stipends or grants for unpaid internships; interested students are encouraged to contact their schools for information or requirements. Scheduling for this position is flexible and can be arranged on either a part-time or full-time basis.  A minimum commitment of at least 15 hours per week is desired.
