The faculty, students, and colleagues of the School of Library & Information Studies at the FSU College of Communication & Information presented a hefty amount of research at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), Nov. 6–9, Vancouver, BC.

Dr. Corinne Jörgensen, director and chair of the School of Library & Information Studies (SLIS) at the College, served on the conference committee for the event, entitled “Thriving on Diversity—Information Opportunities in a Pluralistic World.” Faculty and students received awards, contributed research presentations and posters during the four-day event: 

Awards

  • Doctoral student Annette Goldsmith’s dissertation, “Found in Translation: A Mixed Methods Study of Decision Making by U.S. Editors Who Acquire Children’s Books for Translation,” received honorable mention in the rigorous ASIS&T Technology/Proquest 2009 Dissertation competition.
  • Doctoral student Joy Joung Hwa Koo and Dr. Melissa Gross’ research poster “Adolescents’ Information Behavior when Isolated from Peer Groups: Lessons from New Immigrant Adolescents’ Everyday Life Information Seeking” won the 2009 ASIS&T SIG-USE Best Information Behavior Conference Poster.

  • Image Indexing and Retrieval: Current Projects and a Comprehensive Research Agenda for the Future (SIG VIS)
    Corinne Jorgensen and Besiki Stvilla (Florida State University); Diane Neal (University of Western Ontario); Joan Beaudoin (Drexel University); Elaine Ménard  (McGill University).
  • Drs. Kathleen Burnett and Gary Burnett gave a presentation on their recent NSF-funded award project “VOSS: Virtual Scientific Teams: Life-cycle Formation and Long-Term Scientific Collaboration” at the pre-conference Social Informatics SIG Research Symposium. Their co-principal investigators on the grant are SLIS faculty Drs. Michelle Kazmer, Paul Marty, Besiki Stvilia, and Chris Hinnant.
  • Dr. Gary Burnett was one of the “Initial Discussants” at the SIG/USE session on the next 10 years of Information Behavior research, along with other notables Marcia Bates, Sanda Erdelez, and Eric Meyers.
