Reporting to the Director of Special Collections, the Processing Archivist processes and describes archival and manuscript material and provides on-site and remote reference services in the Special Collections unit of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Library.
Please note this position is funded for one year, with the possibility of a year extension.
Responsibilities include:
- Arranging and processing paper and electronic records.
- Preparing finding aids using ArchivesSpace in accordance with current national standards and local best practices, including Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Resource Description and Access (RDA).
- Assisting in the preservation assessment of collections and performs minor conservation treatments, such as creating custom enclosures or encapsulating materials.
- Managing the physical instances and locations of materials in Special Collections.
- Completing special projects as assigned.
- Planning, directing, and reviewing the work of student assistants, interns and volunteers.
- Performing quality assurance measures on all accessioning work completed by assistants, interns and volunteers.
- Providing on-site and remote reference services for faculty, students, researchers, visiting scholars, and the general public for materials in Special Collections.
- Assisting in developing public programming and outreach activities, including research and installation assistance for exhibits; conducting tours and leading orientation sessions; maintaining usage and user study statistics; and maintaining and developing content for websites and other promotional and publicity-related materials.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in History, Political Science, or relevant field required. Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree preferred.
- Knowledge of current national data content and structure standards related to the intellectual control of archival, library, and museum collections, including EAD, DACS, and RDA.
- Ability to use archival and museum management software systems.
- Ability to manipulate and manage complex tabular datasets is required.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications and analytical ability.
- Ability to design projects and bring them to the conclusion in a timely fashion.
- Knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and other office productivity software is required.
- Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effective both as a team member as independently.
- Ability to work in an environment that contains dust and must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of and experience with ArchivesSpace.
- Experience with OpenRefine and other data manipulation tools is preferred.
