Young Adult Librarian @ NSU Alvin Sherman Library, Fort Lauderdale-Davie

Position REQUIRES a Master’s degree from an ALA accredited program.
Description:

Essential Job Functions
1. Create and implement in-house programming and library instruction for the educational, cultural, technological, and recreational needs of young adults.
2. Create and implement outreach/engagement programs to schools/educators, local community agencies, organizations, and social service institutions serving young adults.
3. Coordinate library field trips for young adults.
4. Responsible for providing and updating content for young adults on library guides (libguides) and the library’s website.
5. Recruits, trains and supervises teen volunteers for the department; keeps all records of participation for reports.
6. Mentors, supervises, and coordinates the activities of the library teen advisory board.
7. Provides reference and readers advisory service to NSU-affiliated library users and Broward County users in person, by phone, and via computer.
8. Assists library users in the use and interpretation of the library collections and in identifying and accessing appropriate materials.
9. Participates in collection development activities to recommend/select/weed young adult materials.
10. Promotes the enjoyment of reading, family literacy and the importance of library card ownership.
11. Assists with annual assessment of programs and services.
12. May be expected to assume responsibility for supervision of volunteers and/or student employees.
13. Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.

Marginal Job Functions
1. Participates in department, library, and university-wide committees as needed.
2. Attends appropriate NSU library and/or Broward County Library meetings.
3. Attends appropriate community agency meetings that serve young adults and their families.
4. Keeps current with recent developments/trends in library services young adults, especially social networking applications.
5. Cross-trains in other areas of Youth Services librarianship, as assigned.
6. Participates in collaborative program opportunities. This may include multi-generation programming.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Knowledge and understanding of library principles, practices and techniques.
2. Current computer skills, including online searching.
3. Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
4. Ability to utilize library electronic resources which may include creating electronic booklists, special departmental resources in area of specialty, using social media, contributing to library webpage content.
5. Ability to cross-train in all developmental areas and age groups in the Youth Services client base.
6. Ability to cross-train in providing reference and readers advisory across age groups served.
7. Ability to work weekend and evening hours as needed.
