Former Florida State University School of Communication (SCOM) student Lauren Pechwasser is a producer, director of photography and editor at NBCUniversal.
During her time at SCOM, several classes left a lasting impact on her, including an experimental video course and a sports media class with Jim Shaw, which unexpectedly led to an internship with ESPN. She ultimately credits Dr. Andy Opel’s documentary class as the most influential. “To this day, I still use things I learned in his class in my career,” Pechwasser said.
After graduation, Pechwasser landed a job with Viacom’s mtvU, a division catering to college students. It was there she earned the title of “Preditor” (producer, editor and shooter), learning to juggle multiple roles—a skill that has been invaluable throughout her career.
Her versatility and work ethic helped her secure positions at major media companies, where she has continued to thrive. Pechwasser’s hard work and dedication paid off when her team won two New York Emmys in 2020 and 2022.
“It was a huge accomplishment, especially since we’re a small team,” Pechwasser said. “Seeing our hard work recognized in that way was incredibly rewarding. Plus it’s really cool to have the statue in your apartment.”
For students aspiring to break into the industry, Pechwasser emphasizes the importance of perseverance and flexibility. “Production and news are going through tough times, so have a Plan B. Say yes to opportunities because you never know where they might lead. And wear closed-toed shoes on set. That’s how I got my first ESPN internship, and it set everything else in motion.”
After working for various top media companies and being awarded an Emmy in the process, Pechwasser’s journey is a testament to adaptability, passion and seizing every opportunity that comes her way.
