Meet COMM Alumna: Beth Frady

BFradyEvery now and then, a person’s passion is so strong that it’s apparent through an email. When Beth Frady was asked about her career in communications, her excitement for her job poured through. Beth graduated from Florida State for the first time in 2006 with a degree in Communication Studies and Rhetoric. Shortly after graduation, she found work as a special education teacher in Okeechobee, Fla. For two and a half years, Beth taught math and reading to students with special needs.

During her time teaching “her kids,” Beth recognized the importance of conveying the same message in different ways to ensure their success. Citing teaching as one of her most cherish positions, each of her students met their yearly gains by state of Florida standards. Itching to position messaging to a larger audience, Beth left her hometown for the second time.

In 2009, Beth returned to Florida State University. This time, pursuing a Master’s of Science in Media and Communication Studies. During her Master’s studies, Beth helped teach Public Speaking as a graduate teaching assistant and eventually as a lead instructor for the course. Her exemplary work earned her an Extraordinary Service Award from the College of Communication and Information.

During her master’s work, Beth completed a Master’s thesis, Broadcast Media Sourcing: A Case Study of the 2010 Healthcare Debate. In the final semester of her thesis work, she began work as the Deputy Communications Director for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Her position’s primary responsibilities included serving as a spokesperson for the agency, facilitating media inquiries and proactively communicating the work of the agency. “During my three and a half years at DBPR, it was a privilege to communicate the agency’s efforts to make it easier and less cumbersome for qualified individuals and businesses to work in Florida,” she shared.

Her time at DBPR stirred a love for Florida’s working environment and she is continuing that passion with a position as the Director of Public Relations for Enterprise Florida. Serving as the primary economic development organization for Florida, Enterprise Florida is a public-private partnership between Florida’s business and government leaders.

“My education at FSU has helped me tremendously throughout my career,” said Beth. “The classes through CCI helped train me to think big, but communicate small. Meaning, know your message is going to a large audience, but understand that the audience is made up of individuals who receive your message differently.”

Since graduating with her Master’s degree, Beth has held two influential positions, started a family, and is excited to make Florida the best place in the nation to live. Find more about Beth’s communication programs here.
