20 Questions with Barry Solomon

  1. What was your first job?
I worked as a dishwasher and busboy at an IHOP in south Florida when I was 15. I eventually moved up to a short-order cook. I loved it. I still enjoy making breakfast, even when it’s for dinner.
  2. If you were to write a personal memoir, what would you name it?
“Well Suited for Every Occasion”. I always wear suits when I teach and I am comfortable in almost any situation, so I think that title would be very fitting.
  3. Where did you grow up?
I was born in Youngstown, Ohio and moved to the Miami area when I was nine. But I’ll never forget the cold, gray winters of the north.
  4. What is your favorite class you’ve taught?
Without a doubt, Principles of Advertising. It’s my baby. I’ve had about 20,000 students take that class since I’ve been teaching it.
  5. What is your favorite place to grab dinner in Tallahassee?
    Cypress.
  6. What are your hobbies outside of work?
Playing golf and collecting wine. I don’t consider it a hobby unless I’m passionate about it, and I’m very passionate about both.
  7. Have you always wanted to teach?
    Absolutely not.
  8. What is your favorite place you’ve traveled to or where would you like to go?
It sounds cheesy, but I loved all of the trips I took with my boys when they were growing up. From the Caribbean to the Magic Kingdom, every vacation with them created memories that have lasted years.
  9. How many football games have you attended?
Including high school, college and NFL, close to 375. I have missed only two FSU home games since 1975.
  10. Proudest career/life moment?
Witnessing the birth of my two boys, Sean and Jordan.
  11. What’s your favorite band?
    The Beatles
  12. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
This wasn’t direct advice, but it was a line from an old song, called “Garden Party” by Ricky Nelson. It’s about someone who goes back to see people he hasn’t seen in a while to reminisce at a Garden Party. He’s made some changes to himself, but others don’t like the changes he’s made. The line in the song is: ” But it’s all right now, I learned my lesson well. You see, ya can’t please everyone, so ya got to please yourself.” You can never make everyone happy with your decisions in life, so be sure that the decision s you make, make you happy.
  13. If money were no object, how would you spend your days?
Playing golf every morning on sun-drenched golf courses, then watching the sun set drinking fine Italian red wine. Pebble Beach would be a good place to start.
  14. What is your favorite book and why?
I read a biography of General Patton when I was young and found it very inspirational. I have always been interested in military history and Patton was not a good student at West Point, but he turned out to be one of the most successful generals in US military history. Determination and passion can take you a long way.

College Football Coaches. And let’s make it a true Daily Double, Alex.
  17. Do you have any pets?
I have an 11-year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, named Rudy. He is named after the character in the Notre Dame football movie because I got him the week after I took my two boys to Notre Dame for an FSU/ND football game. He always helps me remember that great weekend. By the way, FSU won the game 37-0
