Art Raney, Ph.D., delivered a keynote address at the 2014 International Forum on New Media in Shanghai, China, on October 24. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Media and Design & the International Communication Association. “The conference brought together scholars from more than half a dozen countries to discuss how new media technologies are influencing individuals, society, and the academic study of media and communication,” shared Raney.
Raney’s talk, entitled, “Social TV, Second Screening, and the Entertainment Experience,” was inspired by his recent research on how people are using social media sites, like Twitter, while viewing live and first-run television shows. Known as live-tweeting, the stream-of-conscious updating presents new challenges to the academic understanding of the entertainment experience.
