Sunny Park, a doctoral student in the School of Communication, was named the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. Park served as a teaching assistant in Introduction to Public Relations and was the lead instructor in Social Marketing.

“Receiving this award is incredibly meaningful to me,” Park said. “It’s a mark of distinction that sets me apart in a competitive academic market, potentially leading to more opportunities, and positions of influence within academic circles.” Park also spoke about the validation that this award brought to the innovative teaching styles she employs as a teaching assistant, referring to the ways in which she creates an engaging and interactive learning environment.

“In class, Sunny always greeted students cheerfully and helped to create an engaging learning environment by regularly sharing meaningful insights,” said Dr. Elizabeth Ray, the instructor for whom Park served as a teaching assistant. “Beyond her strong work ethic, she is a kind and thoughtful person, with a special talent for baking treats that brighten the day for students, staff and faculty. Her award is well-deserved.”

Park’s advice for future teaching assistants is to always engage in self-reflection and curiosity regarding one’s teaching process. She would also encourage other teaching assistants to focus on the impact of their lessons. “But importantly, try to infuse fun into the learning process,” Park said. “…It’s about creating an environment where students feel excited and motivated to learn. When they see you, as the instructor, genuinely enjoying the process of teaching and exploring the subject with them, it sets a tone.”

To Park, this award shines a light on the possibilities that lie ahead in the field of communication. “It’s a motivator to keep exploring, questioning, and creating impactful educational experiences that prepare students not just for the job market, but for a role in shaping a better society,” said Park.
