Internship Opportunity at FSU Libraries: Scientific Data Librarianship
STEM librarianship is a dynamic field that constantly changes as technology changes and research grows. In particular, research data services, which concern the curation of research data throughout the entire data life cycle, is a burgeoning area of growth in librarianship. With this growth, library support for digital tools instrumental in data analysis and visualization is increasingly vital for STEM researchers. This internship is designed to allow the intern to learn and develop skills necessary to become a librarian that meets the needs and expectations of STEM researchers at a large research university. The intern will have an opportunity to partner with librarians in the design and implementation of impactful projects that support the research, learning, and data services needs of STEM students and faculty. Potential projects include creation of LibGuides and tutorials for digital tools, development of data tools workshops, creation of training materials for data analysis and visualization tools, and more. Interns will have the opportunity to deep-dive into particular aspects of STEM librarianship such as: research data services, instruction, collection development, and scholarly communication.
Learning Objectives:
 Develop an understanding of academic librarianship, with the specific focus on STEM data librarianship.
 Develop skills in various collaboration and project management software applications.
 Develop skills in various data analysis and visualization software applications.
 Gain professional-level project-management experience, choosing a single project and following it through to completion.
These learning objectives will be accomplished through regular readings in current literature on STEM and academic librarianship, integration into current ongoing projects and planning for future initiatives, and active engagement with research faculty and graduate students.
Responsibilities:
 Work with STEM Research and Learning Librarians to develop and complete projects related to scientific data librarianship.
 Create documentation, tutorials, and training materials for various STEM digital tools.
 Develop skills in using data analysis/visualization tools, including MATLAB, Python, and Tableau.
 Assist with current and future digital tools workshop coordination and instruction.
 Performs other duties as assigned and desired.
Qualifications
Required: Interest in academic librarianship. If working as a remote intern, appropriate technology is required (personal computer, webcam and microphone, high-speed internet connection).
Recommended: Comfort and advanced competency with various information technologies including chat, Google docs, online research, and database searching. Exposure to various data analysis and visualization tools including MATLAB, ChemDraw, Tableau, and Python is desirable but not required.
Hours
This is a part-time position with the expectation of 10-15 hours of work per week. Internships for
academic credit will be unpaid.
