Library Reference Intern: Thomas University

POSITION TITLE: Library Reference Intern
NATURE OF POSITION: The Thomas University Library Reference Intern will provide virtual, online reference help through Ask a Librarian chat and email. The intern will have the opportunity to develop original LibGuides, tutorials, and research materials for Thomas University. The LibGuides will pertain to specific academic disciplines, general research strategies and trends, and other academic or special topics. The intern will learn important librarian skills in both interactive, virtual reference and the strategic development of research materials. This position affords the potential to produce a blog post or conference presentation proposal reflecting on the intern’s LibGuides renovation concepts, method, and contributions, should they wish to pursue it.
This position is online so applicants do not need to reside locally. Chat monitoring will take place in the evening hours, but scheduling can be flexible.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Library Reference Intern must have a Bachelor’s degree and be a MLIS degree-seeking student. Must have good technology and customer service skills. Knowledge of information seeking behavior and basic technology troubleshooting is required.
Familiarity with library reference practices and graphic design skills are preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Monitor Ask a Librarian chat room
 Respond to patron inquiries through chat and email
 Troubleshoot and report basic technology issues
 Be available in the evenings to help students working on course assignments
 Update LibGuides and research materials by contributing new material, editing and revising current material, and enhancing the graphic quality
 Maintains confidentiality
 Demonstrates friendly and professional customer service behavior
 Complies with the policies, procedures, and mission of the university and library.
