SOCIAL SERVICES IN LIBRARIES LIS INTERN
Social Services in Libraries is an ongoing pilot project designed to explore the efficacy of embedding social workers in public libraries and providing library staff with training, support, and the resources needed to support their patrons’ social service needs. SEFLIN currently partners with Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University, Miami-Dade Public Library System, Palm Beach County Library System, and community agencies to achieve the goals of this grant-funded project.
This exciting project works to bridge the gap between social services and library services to foster cooperative relationships, promote human-centered librarianship, and serve our most vulnerable populations.
The current grant cycle concludes on September 30, 2021.
Position: Part-time position reporting to the Executive Director. Multiple positions are available.
Salary Range: Internship offered as unpaid. Interns should seek approval from their institution for a for-credit internship, practicum, or independent study congruous with the social work in libraries project and responsibilities defined below. SEFLIN staff will meet institutional reporting requirements for for-credit internship.

Position Summary: This internship supports the Social Work in Libraries project, an LSTA Grant Funding project in partnership with Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) and Palm Beach County Library System (PBCLS). This is an administrative support and project-based internship, available for remote work. Ability to attend Social Services Committee meetings virtually000000000 may be required
Responsibilities: The following responsibilities are characteristic of projects for which an intern would provide administrative support. Depending on length of internship, credit hours internship is for, and immediate need, responsibilities and projects may vary.
● Aid in developing and maintaining a filing system for the Social Services in Libraries, Fearless Mindful Youth Program, Digital Youth Discussion Group (DYDG) and Adobe Digital Design.
● Aid in organization and oversight of statistical data for varied projects, such as:
o MDPLS – Social Services in Libraries
o PBCLS – Social Services in Libraries
o Fearless, Mindful Youth Program

o Responsive Librarianship
▪ Bibliotherapy

● Aid in helping maintain files, research, identify potential resources for the Information and Referral Research Guide:
o Oversight, management of relations with workers on Information & Referral Guide: MDPLS, PBCLS, BCL, MCLS

● Aid in research for varied projects
● Aid in developing contact lists for varied projects
● Aid in development of varied forms
● Aid with organization by developing and managing projects in Asana and or other project management systems as assigned
● Aid with communication on specific Social Service, DYDG, FMYP, Adobe Digital Design Projects to varied local social service agencies and libraries
● Assist in preparation of regularly scheduled reports
● Assist in preparing memos, forms for varied projects
Minimum Education and Experience
Enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
● Demonstrated skills for innovative thinking and creativity in planning, implementing, and evaluating services are required.
● Demonstrated excellence in office productivity computer skills including intermediate level proficiencies in Microsoft Office applications as well as data management for online membership and course management databases is required.
● Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in library services and technology, through professional associations or education, is required.
● Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, written, and oral skills are required.

Duration of internship is flexible, but no less than four hours per week for three months. Weekly obligation and duration of internship to be determined by institutional requirements.
The current grant cycle concludes September 30, 2021. If additional funding is not secured to renew the program, all internship activities must cease by that date.
Non-academic interns may be considered but must additionally supply a Statement of Purpose explaining why they are interested in participating in this project on a purely volunteer basis.
