VIRTUAL CPCC Library LibChat/LibAnswers Internship

The LibChat/LibAnswers Internship program provides current library school students with hands-on experience in several areas of academic librarianship. Interns will work collaboratively with library staff to assist users with the Instant Messaging component of the LibChat service, answering chat (IM) questions from users, and creating and adding frequently asked questions to CPCC’s library knowledge base.

Other projects, such as writing instructional content and creating tutorials, may also be available as time permits.

Interns will be appointed on a semester basis. Preference is given to candidates who have completed at least 12 credits in an accredited library school program and have already taken their basic reference course.

POSITION AVAILABLE: January 2018 and will continue until semester’s end.

WORK SCHEDULE: Work schedule requires approximately 10 hours per week, Monday – Thursday, 6:00pm – 8:00pm and Sundays, 7:00pm – 9:00pm. This excludes observed holidays.

DUTIES: Providing research assistance to individuals via LibChat (IM). Referring users to appropriate staff from the Library. Other projects as assigned by intern supervisor.

REQUIRED:  Must be current graduate student in an accredited library school program during the Spring 2018 semester.  Must be able to receive course credit for the internship (i.e., via practicum or similar internship course). Must have reliable access to a computer and high-speed Internet during internship.

PREFERRED: Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Coursework in reference service and completion of at least 12 credits in an accredited library school program. Strong commitment to service. Ability to evaluate, understand, and respond to research questions by utilizing knowledge of library resources. Interest in academic librarianship. Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a face-paced, team environment. Comfort with technology and the ability to problem-solve on-the-fly.
