Assistant Systems Librarian-University of Mary Washington, Fredricksburg, VA

The University of Mary Washington is seeking an energetic, innovative person to serve as the Assistant Systems Librarian. The person in this position is responsible for maintaining the UMW Libraries web site (http://libraries.umw.edu) and associated web-based applications, including LibGuides and Chamo, the public interface with our Virtua ILS.

 

The Assistant Systems Librarian works collaboratively with other library staff and with the University’s Director of Digital Communications and the University Webmaster to maintain Library branding across its web presence and to support other marketing efforts, and to develop and deliver relevant web resources and services.

 

Under the supervision of the Systems Librarian, this librarian provides technical support for new library initiatives and to maintain existing library systems. Among the initiatives we anticipate undertaking in the coming years are the migration to a next-generation library system with a discovery layer and the full implementation of the University’s digital repository. With the assistance of at least one student assistant, the Systems Librarian and the Assistant Systems Librarian provide the initial desktop support on the Fredericksburg campus, and the two librarians work closely with the Information Technologies department to maintain all library equipment and services.

 

In addition, this librarian serves on the reference desk, including occasional Saturday duty. The librarian serves on library and campus committees and participates in the libraries’ planning and assessment processes.

 

Required qualifications:

Master’s degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master’s program (MLS/MLIS).

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of web design and development.

Experience with standard web programming languages such as XHTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript or SQL. Excellent communication skills, including written communication.

Experience with various operating systems including Windows and Unix and their related web technologies.

 

Preferred qualifications:

Experience developing for both desktop and mobile web platforms and knowledge of responsive design practices.

Experience with digital repositories.
