RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepare materials for inclusion in the library collection. Provide access to materials by verifying or providing descriptive cataloging and access points according to RDA core standards and Library of Congress subject headings. Assist in searching for and copy cataloging of nonprint, adult nonfiction, juvenile fiction and nonfiction materials. Verify or supply classification numbers of either Dewey Decimal Classification with Cutter numbers and/or the ANSCR classification number. Verify and provide MARC-tagging of bibliographic records for assigned cataloging areas. Trained to perform entry-level original cataloging in OCLC. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited master of library science graduate. One to two years on-the-job training and/or experience in cataloging in a public library setting is desirable. Knowledge of OCLC, MARC, AACR2, Dewey Decimal classification, and Library of Congress subject headings. Independent judgment sufficient to determine subject matter of materials, and the number and nature of catalog access points for optimal success. Ability to concentrate at a work station for 90% of work time on tasks requiring close attention to detail. Ability to move up to 30 pounds of materials from one surface to another 5-10% of the work day. Strong multi-tasking skills to adapt to department workflow needs. Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential. Ability and willingness to work Monday through Friday, mostly daytime hours.
If job is accepted, must apply for and maintain Indiana Librarian Certification, earning 50 LEU (Library Education Units) within five years.
PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES: Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable but not required.
