Job Description
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is a small nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress. The Office of Communications seeks an intern with a strong work ethic to assist with the agency’s media relations and public affairs during the summer.  The successful candidate will report to the Associate Director for Communications and will serve as a key member of the communications team. Duties include responding to phone and email inquiries from the media and general public on a wide range of topics, attending and preparing for Congressional hearings, and working on other communications projects as needed.
Previous communications interns have served a frontline role representing CBO and have interacted regularly with staff across the agency as part of performing their day-to-day responsibilities.

Qualifications
Candidates must be working toward a master’s degree, preferably in journalism, mass communications, radio/television, or a related field and should have a strong focus on and interest in government or political science.
Candidates must thrive in a fast-paced environment and be able to effectively handle multiple tasks and complete projects under tight deadlines. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are required. Previous experience in journalism or media relations is desired, and familiarity with and interest in social media would be a plus.
Salary and Benefits
The hourly rate ranges from $16.00 to $25.00 per hour and will be based on academic level and related experience. This is a temporary position that is expected to last approximately 10 weeks between May and August. The selected candidate would be expected to work a 40-hour week, but an alternate schedule may be considered. Housing and relocation expenses are not provided, but the candidate will be eligible for a local transportation subsidy.

How to Apply
Please submit a cover letter, résumé, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for two references online at www.cbo.gov/careers. First-year graduate students must also submit unofficial undergraduate transcripts. Only complete applications will be considered. Although there is no deadline, this position may be closed when CBO has received a sufficient number of applications from qualified candidates. This position is governed by the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act, as made applicable by the Congressional Accountability Act, as amended.
