Position Purpose:

The Communications Specialist I provides general support to the Senior Director of Communications. Additionally, the Communications Specialist develops targeted online and offline communication materials that support the Foundation’s goals and objectives.


Principal Responsibilities:

• Write and edit feature stories, impact stories, articles and briefs for various internal and external publications in accordance with accepted stylistic standards;
• Articulate key messages that advance the Foundation’s mission and goals;
• Assist Senior Director of Communications and other Foundation staff with writing, editing and proofreading letters, programs, press releases, invitations and electronic communications;
• Identify story ideas, conduct interviews and research, and develop impact and feature stories for oneFSU and Foundation websites;
• Maintain current information and update content as necessary on oneFSU and Foundation websites;
• Compile “Recent Gifts to FSU” and update website accordingly;
• Coordinate and update the master calendar housed on the Foundation Portal home page;
• Organize monthly All-Staff meetings, including the drafting of talking points and the gathering of agenda items;
• Take and edit minutes for Board of Trustees meetings;
• Assist Senior Director of Communications in the development of collateral materials and case statements;
• Keep abreast of fundraising and communications best practices;
• Protect confidential information; and
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree required;
• Minimum of two years of professional experience in journalism, communications, public relations or related field;
• Experience in a university environment preferred; and
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products.

• Outstanding interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse audience of alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and University community members;
• Ability to work independently, take initiative and follow-through on issues;

• Willingness to work collaboratively as a member of the Foundation team, participate enthusiastically in the life of the University;
• Customer-service oriented approach;
