POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a highly responsible position within the Communications Office of the Department of Elder Affairs. The Community Relations Manager assists in developing and maintaining an extensive public information/public relations program for the Department, and is expected to often work independently under the Communications Director. The position is responsible for: • Serving as principal Editor of Elder Update, the Department’s bimonthly newspaper for and about elders. This includes planning each issue; soliciting articles and other material from sources within and outside the Department; editing all material to be included in each issue; working with the Department’s graphic artist on design and layout of each issue; managing the subscriber database; fulfilling post office requirements; communicating with printer in advance of and during production and distribution of each issue; and responding to written and telephone inquiries and comments from subscribers. • Drafting the Secretary’s Message for each issue of Elder Update and for various monthly publications willing to print such messages. • Supervising production of Department videos to be created in-house. This includes working with program staff to develop concepts for videos and appropriate scripts; shooting video as needed with Department digital video camera; editing raw footage to produce finished product; and creating copies as needed by program staff. • Primary coordination of Ambassadors for Aging Day, the Department’s annual “Seniors Day” at the Florida Capitol. This includes planning, coordinating and publicizing all facets of the event, with the assistance of a team of Department staff volunteers. • Supervising operations and staff of main Department Contact Center (switchboard) • Assisting the Communications Director in reviewing and approving materials for external distribution by Department program staff. • Coordinating and managing presentation materials for the Secretary’s Office. • Drafting talking points/speeches for the Secretary’s use at events and appearances. • Alerting news media of upcoming Department events or appearances. • Coordinating or assisting in internal and external Department events. • Assisting the Communications Director in gathering appropriate information for media interviews and press releases. • Recruiting and supervising Communications interns. • Representing the Department of community and statewide functions. • Other duties as assigned by the Communications Director, division director, Chief of Staff or Secretary.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED: REQUIREMENTS: SPECIAL NOTE: Strong writing, editing, video production and event organizational skills are highly desired for this position. Knowledge of video equipment and video editing software is preferred. Bachelors degree in Communications or related field preferred. Preference will be given to Department of Elder Affairs employees.
