Instructional Design Librarian Resident

Mary P. Key Diversity Residency – Ohio State University Libraries

The Mary P. Key Residency program provides professional development in a nurturing yet productive real-world environment. This two‐year residency program for a recent library school graduate bridges academic training with practical experience and increases diversity from underrepresented groups for academic librarianship and The Ohio State University Libraries. The program also supports succession planning for key responsibilities within the Libraries.

Responsibilities

This position will have primary responsibility for creating and maintaining teaching tools in an environment that emphasizes technology, such as online tutorials and assignments, as well as online and hybrid credit courses offered by the Libraries. The Resident will participate in regular activities and programs of the Teaching and Learning Unit, including the Make the Leap online instructional program for new freshmen, net.TUTOR, teaching an online research skills credit course, international student orientation, the Head Hunt orientation game, providing course‐related lectures on request, supporting library faculty instructional efforts, and other pilot programs to advance Libraries teaching‐related strategic initiatives.

Under the supervision of the Head of the Teaching and Learning Unit, the Resident will develop skills needed to provide effective in‐person and online instruction. The Resident will have the opportunity to learn about:

 Active learning techniques and methods for engaging students

 Course management systems and related technologies

 Video and screencasting production

 Delivery of instruction using mobile devices

The Resident will be encouraged to participate in appropriate professional development workshops, conferences, and institutes, and will serve in an ex officio capacity on the Libraries Teaching and Learning Committee and the Diversity Committee. As a Visiting Faculty member, the Resident is strongly encouraged to engage in professional research and publication. The Resident will provide a faculty annual report as well as periodic reports to the Diversity Committee to track progress on established objectives.

The Head of the Teaching and Learning Unit will serve as the Resident’s primary mentor. The Associate Director for Research and Education, others in the unit and faculty colleagues will also provide support.

Required Qualifications

 Applicants should have recently completed requirements for a Masters degree from an ALA-accredited

institution, no later than June 2011.

 Mastery of English and demonstrated communication skills.

 Experience or interest in provision of instruction in a technology‐rich environment.

 Knowledge of emerging technologies.

 Interest in professional development and research.

Desired Qualifications

 Previous teaching experience.

 Previous curriculum development experience.

 Experience with a course management system (CMS), such as Blackboard, Moodle, or Desire2Learn.

 Multimedia production and web publishing skills.

Salary and Rank

This is a Visiting Faculty (non‐tenure-track) position. There is the potential for conversion to a regular tenure‐track appointment at the end of the residency, dependent upon successful completion of the program and availability of funding. Salary is negotiable.
