The Middle District of Florida Historical Society Archives is seeking an archivist for a part-time position performing the duties of acquisition, organization, description, management, preservation, and provision of access to archival materials. The Archives collects and preserves paper and digital records and artifacts related to the rich history of the United States District Court and the United States Bankruptcy Court in and for the Middle District of Florida.
The Middle District of Florida is one of the largest federal judicial districts in the country, encompassing 35 of Florida’s 67 counties, with divisions in Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, and Tampa. The Archives are located at the George C. Young Federal Annex Courthouse in downtown Orlando.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in History, Library Science or related field. An archivist or public records management certification is preferred
- Internships or other professional experience in an archival setting
- Experience or interest in the areas of Public History, Civics or Judicial History
- Ability to work independently and efficiently
- Experience and interest in conducting oral histories
- Experience with acquisition, accessioning, preserving, and maintaining collections according to archival standards, including experience working with or handling archival materials in various formats
- Experience with digitizing collection materials
- Cataloging knowledge, including EAD coding, PastPerfect or other cataloging software
- Superior organizational skills and a general understanding of the federal judicial system are highly desired
The position is flexible, but it is anticipated that the archivist will work for 10-20 hours a week. Compensation not to exceed $50 per hour, depending upon experience. Some in-district travel would be expected, with travel expenses reimbursed. Due to the nature of the work, hiring is conditional upon successful completion of a background check.
