Summary of the Position
The Head Librarian of the Garzon Library is a full-time employee who works closely with Middle and Upper School students and faculty to provide a strong collection of information resources for the Vaughn Road campus. The Head Librarian manages and curates the library’s print collection, electronic databases and digital resources. The librarian guides access to resource information for both students and faculty, promotes reading and critical thinking skills throughout the campus, and helps students develop research skills. The head librarian often teaches sessions on research skills and source management and also supports the reading program within our English department curriculum. The Head Librarian is supported by a part-time associate librarian and works closely with the Head Librarian of Weil Library, the library at the Lower School campus.
The Garzon Library
The Garzon Library serves students in grades 5-12 and provides a broad spectrum of learning opportunities for Middle and Upper School students and faculty. The Garzon Library houses more than 34,000 volumes, a seminar room that can be equipped with 28 laptop computers, 10 look-up and work stations and access to over 60 electronic databases. The facility is designed to accommodate both teacher-led classes and student-organized groups in a variety of study areas. The facility also allows ample space for quiet individual study and recreational reading. The library is also the temporary home of many works of art created by students as part of their study of both ancient and modern civilizations and provides a haven for young readers and information seekers. The Garzon Library is fully automated with an online catalog with access to subscription databases including JSTOR, online periodical indexing and retrieval, and wireless Internet access.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  • Managing collection and resources of the Garzon Library
  • Managing the information technology and digital resources in the library
  • Administering the library budget, including purchase of all resources, materials, and supplies
  • Supporting the faculty in the development of resource collections to support research projects
  • Teaching students research skills in the library and using digital sources
  • Promoting a love of reading through general knowledge of literature and reading for pleasure and through support of the English Department reading program.
  • Overseeing the work of the Associate Librarian
Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies, preferably from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Strong knowledge of literature, periodicals and research tools
  • Strong background and experience in the use of informational, instructional and educational technology
  • Strong background in the teaching of reading and literature
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Creative and enthusiastic approach to 21st century learning
  • Enthusiasm for and appreciation of children
