Samford University Library seeks a reference librarian. Located in suburban Birmingham, Samford is the largest privately-funded and fully-accredited institution of higher learning in Alabama. The university library, with nearly one million holdings, serves the university community of more than 4,800 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 700 full-time employees. Position Description: The reference librarian reports to the chair of reference and research services (RRS). RRS is comprised of four librarians and numerous student workers. The reference librarian provides professional reference and research support to Samford students, employees, and the local community. The individual in this position: 1) participates significantly in information literacy instruction in classroom, online, and one-to-one environments; 2) performs collection development and liaison activities as required; 3) serves on library and university committees; 4) provides reference service on a rotating basis to cover all hours that the library is open, including some weekend and some night duty; and 5) performs additional duties as required.
REQUIRED Qualifications: MLS/MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution should be completed by or prior to Sept. 1, 2014. The candidate must be supportive of the university’s Christian mission. The candidate also must have the potential to meet university requirements for promotion; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; ability to work cooperatively with others; strong commitment to quality service; and willingness to work in a flexible, changing environment.
PREFERRED Qualifications: Academic library experience. Basic web design, web tools (e. g., LibGuides, LibAnswers), and online tutorial creation and editing skills (e.g., Camtasia). Teaching, training or public speaking experience.
Rank and Salary: Twelve-month, non-tenure track, faculty appointment; salary commensurate with experience; generous benefits/vacation package; tuition remission.
