North Carolina Reserve Research Coordinator, Beaufort

The North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve (Reserve) is a program of the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management (DCM). The purpose of the Reserve is to acquire and manage areas representative of North Carolina coastal ecosystems to 1) conduct long-term research and monitoring to promote sound management of these ecosystems; 2) increase understanding of these ecosystems, their importance, and the effects humans have on them; and 3) accommodate compatible traditional uses. The Reserve protects more than 42,000 acres of coastal habitats divided among 10 sites that span the length of North Carolina’s coastline. Four of these sites comprise the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve (NCNERR), a state-federal partnership between DCM and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Reserve is managed from four offices located in Kitty Hawk, Columbia, Beaufort, and Wilmington and accomplishes these objectives through its research, education, and stewardship programs.

The Research Coordinator is responsible for: 1) Administering and implementing the Reserve research and monitoring program as outlined in the Reserve management plans, meeting Reserve and DCM needs and National Estuarine Research Reserve System directives, 2) Conducting research and long-term monitoring projects on the Reserve sites that address Reserve topical area and site-based research needs as well as local, state, and national coastal management needs, 3) Fostering partnerships to link the Reserve research and monitoring program to other relevant state, federal and university activities in the state and region to enhance program implementation, 4) Facilitating research by others on the Reserve sites, 5) Translating research and monitoring results for multiple purposes, 6) Advising and participating in relevant groups and committees to advance coastal and estuarine science and policy, 7) Supervising research staff and temporary staff, including providing guidance to graduate research fellows, and 8) Developing and managing the research and monitoring program budget.
