Job Description
The Product Manager position joins an existing product team within American City Business Journals’ Digital Division. You will have product ownership over internal systems and platforms that support The Business Journals digital products such as our content management system, admin tools, and internal wiki. You need to speak both “business” and “tech” to succeed in this role; success will mean Editorial and Revenue stakeholders — as well as more technical teams — understand product goals and objectives.
Our division develops and releases products iteratively based on priority, level of effort, and data. The Product Manager candidate will prioritize for an initial launch and then continuously improve the product based on stakeholder needs and user data.
Candidates should be particularly adept at identifying and solving for operational efficiencies. S/he should be able to lead in a matrixed, distributed team environment and drive meaningful business results in collaboration with the internal, digital, editorial, sales and audience development teams.
Specific responsibilities include
- Serving as the central point of knowledge regarding new or enhanced features with internal systems.
- Drafting product documentation and training internal stakeholders on new or enhanced features.
- Defining the roadmap and vision for internal platform products.
- Understanding, analyzing, documenting, and prioritizing requirements from project lifecycle to launch.
- Testing new feature requests and troubleshooting reported issues related to internal systems.
- Researching market and competitive offerings.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years experience as a Product Manager for online companies or direct working experience in a digital companies with exposure to product and project development cycles and engineering teams.
- Working knowledge of the digital publishing industry and content management systems.
- Strong technical aptitude.
- Understanding of how systems exchange structured information.
- Familiar with concepts regarding how data is stored using relational databases.
- Possesses strong analytical and cross-group collaboration skills to bring the organization to consensus on decisions on both short and long-term product plans.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to effectively prioritize workload and manage changes in direction.
- Ability to interpret and apply required policies and procedures.
- Ability to respectfully challenge conventional wisdom, and drive new best practices.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, suppliers, affiliates, and professional organizations.

- BA or BS equivalent……or incredible work experience in a successful internet start-up.
