Two FSU Ad majors win prestigious AWNY scholarships

Two Advertising majors, Madisen McDonley and Melissa Young, have been selected to receive prestigious Advertising Women of New York scholarships for 2011-2012.

McDonley, a senior, is the president of FSU’s Advertising Club and captain of the university’s competitive advertising team, Arrowhead Advertising, for 2011-2012. She has maintained a 3.6 GPA throughout her college career, despite working at various restaurants to pay her expenses before landing a job at the Zimmerman Agency as a social media coordinator. She will receive $2,500.

Young, a senior double-majoring in Advertising and Marketing, is vice president of the Advertising Club. She was a presenter on last year’s Arrowhead Advertising team and will be research coordinator on the 2011-2012 team. She has worked a variety of jobs to offset her college expenses while keeping a 3.7 GPA. She will receive $1,500.

“Both Madisen and Melissa are exceptional students and worthy recipients of this award,” said Barry Solomon, associate in communication and faculty sponsor of Arrowhead Advertising.

For more than 10 years, the AWNY Foundation has contributed $340,000 to charities and scholarships. In 2012, AWNY will celebrate “100 years of helping women to advance and excel” in advertising and related industries.
