Cataloging Librarian

Position Available:              Eastern Illinois University’s Booth Library is seeking a professional cataloger to serve as a member of its Cataloging Services department, which currently consists of two professionals, two paraprofessionals, and student help.  Applicants should be enthusiastic about the power of cataloging and metadata work to provide and improve access to the world’s information resources.

 

Responsibilities:                   Duties will consist primarily of general cataloging work, both original and copy, dealing with a variety of materials, formats, and subjects.  Cataloging of digital resources and unique materials will be important aspects of the position.  Other duties outside the area of cataloging may be assigned depending on the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate.

Qualifications:                     Candidates must possess an ALA-accredited MLS; a second master’s is preferred and required for assistant professor rank and for tenure.  We expect good working knowledge of Dublin Core, MARC formats, current and developing cataloging and metadata rules and standards, authority control, and Library of Congress classification and subject headings.  Eastern is looking for a person with a high commitment to practical work, with interest and potential in learning, leading, teaching, and supervising others in cataloging and metadata procedures.  Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as are strong interpersonal skills.  Booth Library has a very young institutional repository hosted by Digital Commons, is an OCLC member, uses Ex Libris’s Voyager as its integrated library system, and CONTENTdm for digital object management.  Familiarity with these products will be beneficial.

Terms of Appointment

and Salary:                           This is a tenure-track, 12-month faculty position. Candidates must possess an ALA-accredited MLS; second master’s preferred for appointment and required for assistant professor rank and for tenure. Promotion and tenure requirements are defined by a collective bargaining agreement, and include evaluation in the areas of teaching/primary duties, research and creative activity, and service. The minimum salary for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor is $57,540.
