SLIS intern works on historic FSU achives

During her summer internship at FSU’s Claude Pepper Library, School of Library & Information Studies master’s student Kristen Gurciullo worked with a group processing part of the University’s history and put some of her education into a real-world experience.

“I was primarily processing incoming archival collections. I also created a finding aid in Archon,” she said. “I had previously taken a class in archiving and this allowed me to see how an archival institution functioned on a daily basis—how things went from coming in in boxes, straight through to being properly organized and put on the shelf, turning them into something that researchers can search through to find precisely what they need.”

Kristin worked on processing the papers of Dr. Joseph Lannutti, former Chair of the FSU Physics Department and creator of the first High Energy Physics group in the southeastern U.S. The collection was a gift of the Lannutti family to FSU in 2003. The papers include correspondence about Dr. Lannutti’s role in the recruitment of Nobel prize-winning Paul Dirac to Florida State in the 1970s.
