College Welcomes Five New Non-Tenure Faculty

August 10, 2006 – Tallahassee, FL – The Florida State University College of Information is proud to welcome five new non-tenure track faculty members:

Dr. Peter Jrgensen, Director of Academic and Research Technologies, earned his PhD from the University at Buffalo’s School of Informatics, where he worked as a Senior Applications Analyst in the Computing and Information Technology Division. As part of his job at the University of Buffalo, he managed the Advanced Technology Skunkworks, a team of IT professionals responsible for facilitating the adoption of advanced information technologies. His research interests include artificial neural networks, image indexing and retrieval, new media, spatial display of multidimensional data, and user interface issues.

Dr. Christie Koontz, Associate in Library Studies, is an alumna of the FSU College of Information and has been employed by Florida State University for 16 years. Most recently Dr. Koonz was director of the GeoLib Program which developed the US Public Library Geographic Database. The database includes relevant US census data and library use data from 16,000 communities. Dr. Koontz teaches marketing and is a columnist for Marketing Library Services. She is the co-author of a virtual campus marketing course, which utilizes GIS and published “Library Facility Siting and Location Handbook,” Greenwood Press, 1997. Dr. Koonz is managing recruitment for the College of Information graduate programs.

Dr. Renee Franklin, Assistant in Information Studies, earned her PhD and MLS degrees from the FSU College of Information. Dr. Franklin’s research interests include censorship in public and private schools, library history, and increasing minority participation in LIS education. She has recently taught Research & Data Analysis and is the Internship Coordinator for our School Media Program-advising students, arranging placements, and visiting internship sites. Dr. Franklin will be managing recruitment for the program.

Dr. Mark K. Jowett, Assistant in Information Technology, received his PhD in Instructional Technology from Arizona State University. His teaching and leadership roles have included extensive program development and curricula design. Dr. Jowett has served as the Department Coordinator in the area of Technology at Davenport University, MI, the IT program coordinator for the University of Charleston, WV, and the Software Engineering program director for Apollo College, AZ. He will teach in the area of information technology, including core courses in information systems and services, user needs and preferences, information science, web development and design, research methods, and interface design.

Jane Barrager, Assistant in Information Studies, received both her master’s degree in LIS and her bachelor’s in Information Studies from the FSU College of Information. She comes to us from Florida State University’s Digital Media Production Group, where she has been doing grant-based work and special projects. In her position at the College she will be coordinating faculty efforts and curriculum improvements for the College’s online master’s program; assisting in the professional development of permanent faculty, adjuncts, and teaching assistants; teaching information technology related courses; and, co-directing the i-Learning Lab.
