Undergraduate Research Programmer
The Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) has an immediate opening for a part-time undergraduate student to conduct scientific programming to support ongoing atmospheric and oceanic research. The successful candidate will be working within the COAPS research vessel data center. Duties include (1) directed scientific programming to process observational data sets, (2) developing database coupled web applications to display/serve a wide range of atmospheric and oceanic data products from COAPS, (3) maintaining database systems (primarily MySQL), (4) updating web content (HTML, CSS, and PHP experience desired), and (5) providing user support.
Applicants should have a strong interest in scientific programming, data analysis, and distribution of information via the world wide web. The successful candidate will have strong people skills, a working knowledge of C/C+, FORTRAN, or another scientific language. Candidates familiar with HTML, Perl, PHP, Python, CSS, and Javascript are preferred, but the willingness and ability to acquire new programming skills is also desired. The successful candidate must be able to work within a team environment and be able to meet deadlines established by supervisors.
The position will be filled for the fall 2013 semester, with an employment extension into the spring semester based upon performance. The position is part-time OPS (max 15 hrs/wk) with wages commensurate with experience and typically on the high end for student employment. The applicant must be able to work a regular schedule between 8 am and 6 pm (M-F) at our facility in Innovation Park. Daily transportation from the FSU main campus to Innovation Park is available. Applicants must be enrolled at the undergraduate level.
