Instructors at the Florida State University (FSU) College of Communication and Information (CCI) come from a variety of professional backgrounds. As they have transitioned into careers in academia, they have continued to draw on those experiences to strengthen their teaching. By bringing real-world knowledge and industry perspectives into the classroom, CCI instructors create meaningful learning opportunities that help students connect what they learn in class to their future careers.
One such professor is Rhonda Collins (EdD, PMP), who incorporates hands-on learning into her project management courses, preparing students to navigate challenges they may encounter in their future projects and careers.
“My goal is to help students understand that project management is not just about following processes or using tools, but requires communication, leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, and sound judgment,” said Collins.
With the guidance of their professors, students have opportunities to gain valuable professional experience while still in the classroom. Experiences like these help prepare students for success beyond graduation, giving them the skills and confidence to navigate the workforce as they begin their careers.
“I help students bridge the gap between the classroom and their first professional job or internship by making the learning experience as practical and workplace-oriented as possible,” said Collins. “I want students to build confidence in their ability to think about projects like a project professional.”
Instructors use more than their curriculum to prepare students for their future professions. With a professional background in branding, marketing, and event coordination, Lauren Helm focuses on helping students build their personal brands and use their current jobs and internships to make themselves more competitive in the job market.
“Having that drive to do something that showcases your leadership skills, recognizes the responsibilities of college jobs that you’ve had, and showcases that to your employer is crucial,” said Helm. “Employers are looking for those opportunities where you are able to connect those dots.”
The implementation of hands-on experiences in the classroom is crucial to developing the skills students need to succeed in the professional world. As instructors, it is important to recognize the ever-changing job market and understand how these changes impact the way students learn, as well as the skills and qualifications they need to succeed after graduation.
“As a student, I had to figure out my way pretty much on my own. Textbooks are great, but they’re talking in past tense. They’re not talking about things that are happening now,” said Helm. “It’s important to be able to guide somebody through something that’s relatable, and actually applying this knowledge and these concepts to something that’s happening today.”
As students prepare to enter the workforce, professors ensure they are developing the professional skills and experiences that will help them stand out in a competitive job market.
“It’s a balance between teaching and transitioning students to practicing these skills,” said Collins. “Academic knowledge, practical experience, professional skills, and continuous learning are what provide graduates with a competitive edge in an ever-changing job market.”
