SCSD Professor Creates Hands-On Healthcare Learning for USSTRIDE Students

Dr. Selena Snowden, a professor in the School of Communication Science and Disorders, is helping future healthcare professionals explore the importance of hearing health through hands-on learning and mentorship. In collaboration with the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA), Snowden is hosting a series of experiential learning workshops for students in the Undergraduate Science Students Together Reaching for Diversity and Excellence (USSTRIDE) program, introducing them to audiology through practical clinical experience.

“A conversation, a hands-on learning experience or a word of encouragement can have a lasting effect on a student’s future,” said Snowden.

USSTRIDE serves undergraduate students at Florida State University (FSU), Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Tallahassee State College (TSC), creating opportunities for students from different educational backgrounds to explore healthcare fields and learn about interdisciplinary patient care.

During the workshops, students learn to use an otoscope, identify normal ear anatomy, and practice basic ear examination techniques. The sessions aim to connect classroom knowledge with real-world clinical experiences while increasing awareness of audiology as a potential career path.

“These types of experiences can spark new interests, introduce students to potential career paths they may not have considered before, and allow them to build skills that will be valuable in whatever profession they ultimately choose,” Snowden said.

Snowden hopes students leave the workshop having more technical knowledge and a deeper appreciation for the importance of recognizing each patient as an individual.

“Technical skills are important, but ultimately healthcare is about people,” Snowden said.

She also hopes the experience encourages students to explore healthcare professions beyond their primary interests and recognize the value of interdisciplinary collaboration.

By bringing students from FAMU, TSC, and FSU together, it creates a vast environment for mentorship, learning from different perspectives, and professional development experiences.

Snowden hopes to continue offering these workshops throughout the academic year, helping students build confidence, discover potential career paths, and develop the skills needed to provide compassionate, patient-centered care.
