Expectations are running high for this year’s 2004 Homecoming Weekend (Nov. 5& 6) at the School of Information Studies. Not only because of the record crowd that attended last year’s event, but because this year’s will feature a celebration of the life of retiring Dean Jane Robbins. A special symposium entitled “Marking a Career: Professional Issues in the Life of Jane B. Robbins” will be presented on Friday, Nov. 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. And following the other university homecoming activities, including the FSU Homecoming Parade, “Dean Jane Robbins Retirement Party” at the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science (5:00 p.m.) will cap off a day that is coming to be referred to as “JaneFest.”
The homecoming festivities continue on Saturday morning with activities culminating in the School’s traditional “Convocation & Awards Ceremony,” a celebration of the achievements of its alumni, students, faculty and staff. The School hosts the annual “members only” meeting of its Gamma chapter of Beta Phi Mu at 7:30 a.m., followed by the “School of Information Studies Breakfast” at 8:30 a.m., open to all convocation attendees.
Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the “Convocation & Awards Ceremony” features guest speaker Eleanor Jo (Joey) Rodger, director of the Pendle Hill Peace Network, presenting a Lazerow Lecture entitled “Information and Power.” Between 1992 and 2004, Joey was president and CEO of the Urban Libraries Counsel, the national membership organization composed of the nation’s major urban libraries. Another highlight of the event will be the presentation of the School’s “2004 Distinguished Alumna Award” to Lorraine Dey Summers (MLS, 1969). Lorraine has devoted her career to the improvement of libraries and librarianship, serving as Assistant State Librarian for the State Library of Florida from 1978 to 2001. Following the presentation to our distinguished alumna, will be the presentation and acknowledgement of awards and scholarships to the School’s students, faculty, and staff.
As you can see, the School’s 2004 Homecoming Weekend (Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5&6), has all the makings of a landmark celebration. If you only make it to one homecoming celebration in the next decade, or if you are a distance student who has never attended one, this is the one to catch!
