Maria Gebhardt (M.S. ’09) has been able to build a successful career since graduating from FSU’s Library and Information Studies program. She currently serves as both and the Manager of Integrated Marketing Communications & Social Media for Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and as the editor of the Florida Library Association (FLA)’s bi-annual journal, “Florida Libraries.”
Gebhardt explains, “I think my MLIS is an incredible asset to my skillset. I have been able to use the information that I learned creating digital libraries and apply them in my career on numerous occasions.”
There is never a dull moment at work for Gebhardt. She updates the Facebook and Twitter pages for BCPS, checks analytics and revises strategic communication plans. As the journal editor at FLA, she checks on articles, lays out issues and communicates with librarians throughout the state. However, being this busy is always worth it to Gebhardt.
She shares, “My favorite part is when I actually get to feel the impact of my job. I have seen both students and parents get excited about seeing the student on social media and feeling proud to share it with friends and family. It is a fantastic feeling to know that what you are posting not only showcases the school district, but also makes a difference to students.”
In 2015, Gebhardt received the President’s Award from FLA. Her genuine dedication to editing the journal, designing annual conference guides and building relationships within committees have helped FLA shine.
Of FLA, she says, “Knowing that you are part of an organization with some of the best and brightest people in the nation that are always there to guide and support you is something that I am eternally grateful for in my life.”
In her spare time, Gebhardt enjoys channeling her inner artist. She has been working with different mediums since she was a child, but her favorites are oils, soft pastels and charcoal. You can view her online portfolio here.
