Alice Platt, an alumna of the School of Library and Information Studies (MSLIS, 2009), has contributed a chapter to the recently published Digitization in the Real World, Lessons learned from small and medium-sized digitization projects. The new book is the first to present case study examples of small and medium-sized digitization projects, with information developed by practitioners for practitioners. Alice’s chapter, “Developing an Institutional Repository at Southern New Hampshire University: Year one,” describes the university’s first year of efforts to create a digital repository using open source software after the project was funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant.

Alice was hired as a digital initiatives librarian by Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) to implement the digital repository before completing her master’s degree at SLIS. “SNHU was in a hurry to hire someone,” Alice said. “I started there in March 2009. One of the benefits of being in an online program was that I was able to finish my degree while working in New Hampshire. I graduated from FSU in August 2009.”

Prior to being hired, Alice was living in Tallahassee while working toward her master’s degree. She served as secretary of the ALA student chapter, started the current student chapter newsletter, and worked with undergraduate students in Dr. Lustria’s information architecture course to develop the student chapter website. She also held graduate assistantships in the Strozier Library Technical Services Department and the Strozier Digital Library Center in addition to working as a summer intern at the Ringling Museum of Art Library in Sarasota. A true Floridian, Alice grew up in Okahumpka and had never seen a fresh snowfall before moving to New Hampshire. “My sweater collection has increased immensely,” she said.
