Recent SCOM Alumna Kylee Mukeba Finds Success in Celebrity Marketing

Written by Parker Ladle

Kylee Mukeba, a recent School of Communication (SCOM) graduate, now works as an account coordinator at entertainment marketing agency Starpower in New York City.

Kylee shared more about her role as an account coordinator, her experience with FSU’s School of Communication, and advice she has for students who hope to work in the communication industry in the future.

Q: What company are you working for, what is your role, and how did you find this job?

A: I work for an entertainment marketing agency called Starpower as an account coordinator. My role involves finding creative ways to integrate our clients in pop culture through partnerships, events and campaigns with influencers, celebrities and brand collaborations. I support the talent procurement process through vetting, casting and providing strategic recommendations for our marketing campaigns. I had the opportunity to work in tandem with this company while interning at another agency, so when I saw they had openings on LinkedIn I applied.

Q: How did your classes and experience within FSU’s School of Communication help prepare you for your current job?

A: During my classes in FSU’s School of Communication, there were a lot of group projects. In my role today, I can see how important it is to develop effective teamwork and communication skills. I have a close-knit team for each client I work with, and we manage and complete tight deadlines together. Finding where your strengths lie in group projects will help make you even more valuable at your future job.

Q: What is your favorite part of your job?

A: I think it’s really cool how my job combines culture and strategy. I’ve always kept up with trends, and I love music, fashion, sports and entertainment in general. My role allows me to lean on my passion for pop culture and find ways to be unique and strategic in the partnerships we develop. I work with talent agents, managers and publicists to build relationships and create inspiring work with their talent. I get to do all of this alongside brilliant coworkers, which I’m so thankful for!

Q: What is your advice for current SCOM students who are hoping to work in communication in the future?

A: It may sound ironic, but practice communicating. For example, learn how to effectively communicate through email, when presenting to an audience, pitching an idea or even when representing yourself to others and networking. Being a strong communicator in different areas of your life will help you excel. Taking leadership positions in clubs and organizations or in group projects will give you the experience to grow your communication skills and confidence.
