School of Communication alumna Krista Witiak was awarded an Emmy for her series “Outdoor Colorado!”
Witiak graduated from Florida State University (FSU) in 2019 with a degree in Media and Communication Studies and now serves as a full-time lifestyle anchor and reporter for FOX21 News. Her series “Outdoor Colorado” is a part of FOX21’s lifestyle show, Loving Living Local.
In the series, Witiak is seen engaging and encouraging Southern Colorado viewers to explore various Colorado outdoor locations and activities. The 2023 season explored The Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad, the Capella Ranch Bee Huts, and Collegiate Peaks Off-Road.
“I hope my reporting gets people excited about exploring the amazing outdoor spots in Colorado,” Witiak said. “I would love for my work to help people feel more connected to their community and take pride in the natural beauty around us.”
The series was awarded in the Lifestyle/Magazine/Informational/Instructional – Short Form Content category at the 2024 Emmys on July 20. Witiak won alongside her photojournalist, Ray Harless. “This win acknowledges the countless hours and effort I’ve put into the Outdoor Colorado series. This marks a significant milestone in my career, and I can only imagine the doors and new opportunities that it opens up,” Witiak said.
During her time at FSU, Witiak said she was able to gain a strong foundation in media communications and journalism. With a stronger focus on sports, she worked as a Feature Reporter and Producer for Seminole Sports Magazine, and gained valuable live broadcasting experience as a Live In-Game Host for Seminole Productions, and as a Radio Sports Announcer for WVFS. Witiak said that although she realized her passion didn’t lay in sports reporting, these experiences helped her build the confidence and expertise necessary for her career in lifestyle local television and that her Emmy serves as a testament to the opportunities she gained through FSU.
When asked what advice she has for current students interested in pursuing a career in journalism, she said to get as much hands-on experience as possible, build your network, and follow your passion. She encourages students to stay resilient and keep going.
