School of Communication Professor Mark Zeigler oversees many responsibilities here at Florida State University, from the communication classes he teaches to the graduation ceremonies he attends. Many may not know however that Zeigler also serves as Faculty Director of the Bryan Hall Learning Community.
The Bryan Hall Learning Community provides entering students with a small community within their dormitory to connect. As Faculty Director, Zeigler helps facilitate students’ transition into the University by providing opportunities for the students to engage and learn.
“Because there are only 128 students, they get to know each other rather well,” said Zeigler. “Plus, it is just a few steps from the Suwannee Room Dining Hall, so the frequency of interactions is plentiful.”
Zeigler has been overseeing the Bryan Hall Learning Community for the past three years.
“I enjoy watching [the students] fall in love with their school when they realize all the opportunities amid the welcoming community that is FSU. Without Bryan Hall, that long COVID year would have been void of student interaction. It was a challenge, but worth every second of time and worry.”
Incoming FSU students have the opportunity to apply to the Bryan Hall Learning Community upon accepting their invitation to the University. “We choose students who are serious about getting involved, while recognizing that they don’t quite know what they want to study or major in,” said Zeigler. “I’ve watched students, for years, establish lifelong friendships in Bryan Hall. It’s great to be a part of that.”
