SCSD doctoral student Denisha Campbell has been chosen as a recipient of the 2021 Graduate Student Scholarship from the American Speech-Language Hearing Foundation (ASHA).
This scholarship will provide valuable financial support as Campbell continues her graduate studies. In order to be considered candidates must undergo a review process, and awardees are chosen based on academic achievement, as well as the strength of their application.
ASHA is a professional organization with over 200,000 members, including audiologists, speech-language pathologists, speech, language, and hearing scientists, audiology and speech-language pathology support personnel, and students. Campbell has been an active member since completing her clinical fellowship in 2019. In 2020, she was awarded the Distinguished Early Career Professional Award, which aims to recognize early-career members who contribute to local, state, and/or national leadership, volunteering, and advocacy. Campbell also presented at the annual ASHA conference in 2017, and will be volunteering at the conference in DC this year.
Originally from Chicago, Campbell is a second-year PhD student with a focus on the intersection of social justice and language impairment, as well as cultural responsivity. “This award is a testament to remaining faithful. The news of receiving the award couldn’t have been any timelier, and I am extremely grateful that I now can focus on my academic studies instead of having financial burdens consume my time and energy.” said Campbell, “In my professional life, this award is a testament of the incredible support that I have from all of my mentors who have always encouraged me to apply and try. It also serves as validation that I’ve chosen the correct field; one that continuously honors and recognizes the efforts of the students working in it, so that one day I can pay forward the investment that was put into me.”
She will be recognized on November 18th at the ASHFoundation Awards Celebration in Washington DC. To read more about the scholarship, click here.
