iSchool PhD Candidate Receives Doctoral Fellowship from Beta Phi Mu

Anisah Herdiyanti, a research fellow and PhD Candidate at Florida State University’s (FSU) School of Information (iSchool), received the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from Beta Phi Mu for her study “Exploring Doctoral Student Mothers’ Mobile Device Use for Studying and Parenting: Mixed Methods Research Using the Concurrent Triangulation Approach.”

“Not only has this award boosted my confidence greatly, but it marks my first achievement in undertaking an arduous, ongoing effort to contribute to the field of library and information sciences/studies,” Herdiyanti said.

Herdiyanti’s research hits close to home as she is a mother herself. Her work focuses on researching doctoral student mothers’ mobile device use and the implications it has on perceptions, experiences for studying, and parenting.

“As a student mother myself, I think [multitasking] has been ingrained in me and has impacted the way I cope with having this dual role of being a student and a mother of two daughters,” Herdiyanti said.

On top of her research, Herdiyanti has worked in Indonesia to implement information technology/systems into local governments. This implementation aids in the leading initiative to address a smart city masterplan that aims to further develop the infrastructure of Indonesia and handle international regulations. By honing in on her work on smart living, she hopes to help create a digital world for young children.

“When I graduate from a doctoral program in information, I plan to return to my home country, Indonesia, to continue my teaching and research passion as a junior lecturer at the Department of Information Systems,” Herdiyanti said.

Looking to the future, Herdiyanti plans to open her own research center in order to enable studies about information technology (IT) and how it is a part of everyday life.

Ultimately, this fellowship will allow Herdiyanti to advance her vision as she strives to bridge the gap between understanding the needs of families, mothers, and technology as we continue to adapt to the ever-changing digital landscape.
