Study Abroad and Internship Program‚ Due May 8

The College of Information is accepting applications for the following study abroad and internship opportunity. Delay in the announcement is due to changing visa requirements for students by the UK. This program offers students the opportunity to earn credits while getting to know the culture, customs, and history of another country.

 

Summer-Fall 2009

The FSU London Study Centre is pleased to offer two places in their Study Abroad and Internship Program, one with a focus on Library and Information Studies, one with a focus on Information Technology Administration.

 

Owing to immigration requirements, applications need to be processed as soon as possible. Thus the program has a closing date of May 8. All applicants must have a valid passport through May 2010 and will be required to apply for an entry clearance visa immediately upon acceptance. This process will require submission of biometric data. FSU International Programs will provide guidance on the visa process upon acceptance.

 

The successful applicants will be provided with a comprehensive academic experience in which classroom learning will be complemented by a part-time work placement, six months free shared accommodation in central London, a stipend to cover essential costs, free online tuition, and the opportunity to take part in the free or subsidized F.S.U. trips to England and Europe. Students are required to take the three hour internship course LIS 5945 or 4940 in the summer and fall.  In the fall students must take an additional 3 credit course for a total of six credit hours. Undergraduates if selected may take one 3 hour campus-based course in London.  Graduate students can take an asynchronous College of Information course or DIS.  Students will work 20 hours per week in the library and spend equal amount of time on coursework. 

 

Dates

The program lasts for six months from June 29, 2009, until December 30, 2009. You must be a College of Information student this semester.

 

Applications are reviewed by the College of Information Internship Director and Associate Dean in consultation with other faculty.  Telephone interviews with London staff will be scheduled in mid-May.

General Requirements
The supervisory position requires previous coursework toward the completion of either the MLIS, or Specialist degree. A GPA of 3.00 or higher is mandatory.

  • A current resume.
  • An unofficial transcript of CI studies.
  • A brief statement of between 500–1000 words about why you have an interest in an internship in the London library position and contributions you think you will make to this internship site.
  • Do NOT fill out the online application in Blackboard for the internship—the site is under development.

Financial Aid Students

Keep in mind those stipulations of receiving financial aid when you consider if this internship is suitable for your current situation.  There is a time difference of five hours between FSU’s main campus and London. If you are signed up for courses this summer you may need to reconsider whether these courses are feasible with the requirement of the internship course and the time difference.
