Communication Intern

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) promotes economic prosperity for all Floridians and businesses through successful workforce, community and economic development strategies. DEO’s Office of Communications coordinates media relations and external outreach for DEO by responding to media inquiries and public records requests, facilitating interviews with subject matter experts, connecting with the citizens of Florida through social media, developing communications plans and hosting DEO events.

DEO’s Office of Communications is looking for one unpaid intern for the summer semester. Though the internship does not offer salary, the benefit of hands-on experience with this dynamic state agency will provide great experience and to anyone pursuing a career in communications.

Potential Intern Duties:
•Drafting/editing press releases, newsletter articles, weekly agency successes, website content etc.
•Social media content generation and monitoring
•Event planning and preparation
•Participation in strategic planning and brainstorming
•Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications What We Expect from You:
•Minimum of 20 hours per week
•Strong writing skills and knowledge of AP style
•Ability to conduct the internship in a professional manner
•Ability to multi-task
•Ability to work in a fast paced environment
•Enthusiasm for the field of communications

Desired Skills:
•Writing skills will be highly valued
•Working knowledge of Twitter, Facebook, Hoot Suite, Youtube
•Working knowledge of Web 2.0, Adobe Creative Suite 5.5
•Ability to converse with media and executive professionals
•Earning a Public Relations/Communications degree or a degree in a related field of study
