External Communications/Social Media Intern

 

The Florida Department of Health’s mission is to protect and promote the health of all residents and visitors in the state through organized state and community efforts, including cooperative agreements with counties. The DOH’s Office of Communications coordinates media relations for the Department by responding to media inquiries and public records requests, facilitating interviews with subject matter experts, and advising media outlets of important issues and events.

DOH’s Office of Communications is looking for two unpaid interns for summer and fall semesters.  The internships do not offer salary, but the benefit of hands-on experience with this dynamic state agency will be invaluable to anyone pursuing a career in communications.

What You will Get to Do:

  • Assist with press release writing and distribution
  • Researching and responding to media inquiries
  • Writing features for DOH’s online newsroom – http://newsroom.doh.state.fl.us/
  • Social media content generation
  • Manage web site updates
  • Participation in strategic planning and brainstorming
  • Assist at the Emergency Operation Center during activation
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What We Expect from You:

  • Minimum of 20 hours per week
  • Strong writing skills and knowledge of AP style
  • Conduct the internship in a professional manner. Treat this like a job!
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Enthusiasm for the field of public relations

Skills Desired:

  • Writing skills will be highly valued
  • Working knowledge of Twitter, Facebook, Hoot Suite
  • Working knowledge of Web 2.0
  • Ability to converse with media professionals
  • Earning a PR/Communications degree, English, Creative Writing or related field of study
