Internship/OPS opportunity at FSU Libraries: Scholarly Communication Assistant

The Scholarly Communication Assistant focuses his/her efforts on implementing ongoing open access initiatives and improving outreach to the faculty at Florida State University regarding emerging methods of scholarly publishing. S/He will work on the continued development of FSU’s institutional repository (DigiNole Commons), identify patterns in faculty publishing habits and take part in the planning process for implementing scholarly communication initiatives on campus.


• Works with Scholarly Communications Librarian on open access pilot projects, including developing the collection of faculty scholarship in the institutional repository. The specific projects related to these efforts will depend on the progress of each pilot program.

• Assists in developing a communications plan for the repository, focused both on communication with faculty authors and outreach to a wider scholarly community.

• Gathers and processes citation information for Florida State University faculty authors. Assists with the ongoing development and management of a system to communicate with authors and record decisions, versions and rights statuses. Help evaluate changing needs and possible system developments.

• Researches copyright issues in regard to specific journal titles and articles submitted for inclusion in DigiNole Commons.

• Assists with ongoing development of the institutional repository web interface. This could include gathering data and analytics about how the site is accessed, used and interacted with.

• Performs other duties as assigned

Ongoing projects:

• Planning/coordinating Open Access Week

• Open Access Now (A COAPI project)

• Collection development in DigiNole Commons

• Participation in the Digital Scholars Discussion Group

• Participation in the FSU Libraries Copyright Committee

• Develop support structures for open access publishing and archiving

• Develop open access journals using DigiNole and Open Journal Systems

• Work with APIs, OAI-PMH harvesting to ingest scholarly content (arxiv, SSRN, PMC, PhilPapers, Academia.edu, etc.)

This position could be filled by a remote student as an unpaid internship, with approval by the internship coordinator and/or supervising librarian.


Required: Interest in academic librarianship, open access, copyright, digital repositories, altmetrics, library publishing and digital scholarship. If working as a remote intern, appropriate technology is required (personal computer, webcam, secure internet connection).

Recommended: Comfort and advanced competency with various information technologies including chat, Google docs, online research, database searching and basic metadata.


This is a part-time position with the expectation of 20 hours of work per week. The on-campus OPS position will be offered at $15/hour. Remote internships for academic credit will be unpaid.
