Call for Papers: iSchools and education in data curation

Call for Papers

Workshop to be held in connection with TPDL 2013,

September 26th, 2013, Valletta, Malta

Moving beyond technology: iSchools and education in data curation.

Is Data Curator a new role ?

Workshop background

The increase of digital content in the broad areas of Institutional and domain specific Repositories, Libraries, Archives and Museums and the increased interest in the sharing and preservation of “research data” have triggered the emergence of some buzz words that more and more appear in the literature, such as Convergence (in this context the merging of the education curricula and the professions for information professionals in the disciplines of Library Science, Archival, and Museum Studies), Digital Curation (in this context the actions needed to enrich and maintain digital material over its entire life-cycle and over time, for current and future generations of users) and Data Curator (in this context the person/organization responsible for all the activities connected with the management/curation of digital data, in particular of research data).

Workshop objectives

The main objective of the workshop is to provide additional insight in the complex interplay between education, research and curation (including long term preservation) of digital data. In more practical terms, it is expected to contribute to a more precise definition of the content of the curricula needed for the education and training of the information professionals, gain a better understanding of the level at which a convergence of the three traditional professions could be achieved, contribute to a more global view of the access and preservation of research outcomes (for present and future sharing), which today are very often scattered in libraries, archives, institutional repositories, data bases, etc.

The full-day workshop (on September 26th) will be held in connection with the TPDL 2013 Conference<http://www.tpdl2013.info/> (Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries), to be held on September 22-26, 2013 in Valletta, Malta. Expected contributors and participants in the conference and in this workshop are educators, information professionals involved in the storage and preservation of research data, scholars from different disciplines interested in understanding and achieving the preservation of their research data. The workshop intends to provide an opportunity for discussing and sharing experiences both in research and education, especially in the context of curation of research data. A satellite event at TPDL(G-WiS: Global Collaboration of iSchools<http://tpdl2013.upatras.gr/satellite.php>) can provide additional opportunities for contributions and participation from scholars and educators in iSchools, traditionally in the forefront for innovative curricula and adaptation to a changing environment in education, research and professional activities. A more detailed description of the workshop can be found at the TPDL web site<http://tpdl2013.upatras.gr/ws-datacur.php>.

Call for contributions

We invite contributions and concrete examples of research projects, educational programmes and training initiatives in digital curation and research data management, illustrating approaches, methodologies and success stories addressing the need for an increasingly qualified “information workforce” in the data library, data centre, archive, museum and cultural heritage sectors. Topics include, but are not limited to:

* Who is the Digital Curator ?

* Education of researchers and curators for the present and the future

* Core skills for the data scientist

* Training programmes and modules

* How are data curation skills embedded in curricula ?

* Data science curricula: building human capacity

* Lifelong learning in digital curation

* Existing opportunities for information professionals

* Sustainability of digital curation curricula

* Multimodal methods of teaching and learning digital curation

* Capitalizing on the value of open data

* Data publication and its role in scholarly communication

* Tensions between maintaining quality and openness

* Tensions between maintaining openness and ownership

* Workflows in the data life-cycle

* Effective management, sharing and reuse of data

* Mobile data services to enhance teaching, learning and research

* Implementation of cultural changes: barriers and enablers

* How curators are deployed in practice?

* What are the new research and development results in data curation?

* Curation of disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and/or mixed data collections

* Convergence for the next generation of data preservation and curation
