Study Abroad and Internship Program:

Earn your degree while exploring the world! Due March 30!!

 

The School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), College of Communication and Information (CCI) is accepting applications for the following study abroad and internship opportunity. This program offers students the opportunity to earn credits while getting to know the culture, customs, and history of another country.

 

June 2013 – December 2013

 

The Florida State University (FSU) London Study Centre http://international.fsu.edu/london/ is pleased to offer two places in their Study Abroad and Internship Program, one with a focus on Library and Information Studies, one with a focus on Information Technology Administration.

 

Successful applicants will need to apply for a visa to work in the UK, consequently applications need to be received by March 30. All applicants must have a valid passport through the end of June 2014, and will be required to apply for an entry clearance visa immediately upon acceptance. This process will require submission of biometric data. FSU International Programs (IP) will provide guidance on the visa process upon acceptance. To be eligible for the visa applicants must current full time students registered in the department of SLIS/CCI for a degree.

 

The successful applicants will be provided with an academic experience in which learning will be complemented by a part-time work placement, six months free shared accommodation in central London, a stipend to cover essential costs, free online tuition (with registration through IP) and the opportunity to take part in the free or subsidized F.S.U. trips to England and Europe. Students are required to take the three hour internship course LIS 5945 or 4940 in the summer and fall. Other online courses can be taken with registration through IP with the agreement of SLIS/CCI and IP. Students will work for 30-35 hours per week in the library completing routine duties along with personal learning objectives.

 

Dates

 

The program lasts for six months from June 2013 – December 2013. Exact dates will be given to the successful candidates.  You must be a College of Communication & Information, School Library & Information Studies (SLIS) graduate student (for the library position). Undergraduate (SLIS) Information Technology students are considered for the IT position.  You must be enrolled this semester.

 

Applications are reviewed by the SLIS Information Internship Director and SLIS Director in consultation with other faculty.  Telephone interviews with London staff will be scheduled in April.

General Requirements

The supervisory position requires previous coursework toward the completion of either the MLIS, or Specialist degree. A GPA of 3.00 or higher is mandatory.

 

Procedures:

Submit electronic versions of the following to Dr. Christie Koontz (ckoontz@fsu.edu) by March 30, 2013.

  • A current resume.
  • An unofficial transcript of CI studies.
  • A brief statement of between500–1000 words about why you have an interest in an internship in theLondonlibrary position and contributions you think you will make to this internship site.
  • Do NOT fill out the online application in Blackboard for the internship—the site is under development.

Keep in mind those stipulations of receiving financial aid when you consider if this internship is suitable for your current situation.  There is a time difference of five hours between FSU’s main campus and London. If you are signed up for courses you may need to reconsider whether these courses are feasible with the time difference
